Caique

The Class Clown

Caiques are considered by many to be the biggest clowns around when it comes to aviculture.  Caiques are known for their antics, be it playing on their back like a dog, or hanging around upside down.  These birds are all about playing, so much so that its as if they never stop.

Caiques are natural born climbers and can climb just about anything you have in your house.  In fact, they tend to be better climbers than flyers in the wild.  They have a bulky physical design that makes flying a bit clumsy for them.  Clipping a Caique's wings will not stop it from going exactly where it wants to go.

Baby Caiques

Caique's can live to be about 45 years old with major developmental periods happening between 1-1.5 years and 2-3 years old.  Caiques need a particularly large cage due to their playful nature and many toys, including ground toys (as they love playing on their backs).  In general Caique's are very beaky birds and are best suited to those who understand their insatiable curiosity and relentless stubborness at times.

Caiques come in two flavors - Black Headed and White Bellied (despite the fact that both subspecies have white bellies).  Black Headed Caiques and White Bellies differ in their personalities.  Black Headed Caiques are non-stop, ever playing.  White Bellied Caiques tend to be a bit more vocal and snuggly.

Marlene Says:

Caiques are very loving, playful birds but can be demanding on time.  Its important to work with them often and remain vigilant in their daily training.  During hormonal periods a Caique can beceome obstinant.  Caiques should always be watched as their fearless nature can often get them in trouble.  Caiques work well in many house hold types and are very 'hands on' parrots.
